Personal Question

Will it Work?

In my dual role as an architect, balancing my work as an employee in a firm and my founding of my own practice, I've noticed a conspicuous gap in our community's discourse. This discrepancy relates to the divide between those who work for others and those who steer their independent architectural ships. According to the AIA Firm Compensation Survey, well over half of all architects in the United States fall under the category of employed individuals. That's a significant majority. But are we talking enough about this demographic schism? How do we engage in meaningful discussions about architects who dedicate their nine-to-five to realize someone else's design visions? And what about those who, after those eight hours, still pursue their own architectural dreams?

I find myself in a unique position as an architect, constantly shifting between different roles and perspectives. This blog represents my endeavor to delve deeper into my relationship with my profession, to unearth the enigmatic layers that lie beneath its surface.

My professional journey has been marked by highs and lows, successes and setbacks, moments of elation and periods of melancholy. With every blog post, my aim is to plunge further into the intricacies and complexities of the architectural realm. Some posts may be theoretical, serving as sparks to ignite conversations. Others might be personal, sprinkled with anecdotes that illuminate the world of architectural work. But all of them will be a mirror reflecting an architect's thoughts and stories from the trenches of work. This blog will encompass everything that transpires during a typical architect's workday – hence the title, "Wednesday Wednesday."

It's an exhilarating yet formidable undertaking. There's no certainty in this pursuit, no guarantee of a triumphant outcome. In fact, is there even a tangible measure or purpose in evaluating the success of this blog? Nevertheless, I push forward, embracing the uncertainty as an integral part of the journey. After all, where's the motivation if this blog were destined for unqualified success – whatever "success" might mean in this context?

The question of whether this blog will flourish or falter remains shrouded in mystery. Nevertheless, my commitment remains unwavering, and my determination unyielding. The outcome of this journey may forever elude me, and that's perfectly acceptable. Along the way, I'm learning and evolving, and for that, I'm profoundly grateful.

Regardless of the blog's future, my hope is that "Wednesday Wednesday" will serve as a meaningful voyage of self-discovery and exploration. It's an opportunity to reflect, to share my thoughts and ideas, and most importantly, to connect with others. In the grand scheme of things, that's what it's all about – forging connections, learning, and embracing the unknown.
